The Woman Who Anointed Jesus’ Feet: When Forgiveness Becomes Devotion

An Unexpected Visitor

In the Gospel of Luke 7:36–50, we find a powerful encounter that took place during a dinner hosted by a Pharisee named Simon the Pharisee.

Pharisees were respected religious leaders who carefully observed the laws and traditions of Jewish life. When Simon invited Jesus Christ to his home, it likely drew the attention of others in the community.

Meals in that culture were often semi-public gatherings. People sometimes entered or observed conversations while the guests reclined around the table.

During the meal, an unexpected visitor entered the house.

Scripture simply describes her as “a woman in that town who lived a sinful life.”

Her reputation was widely known.

A Moment of Deep Emotion

The woman entered carrying an alabaster jar of perfume, something extremely valuable. These jars were often used to store costly fragrant oil.

Instead of speaking, she approached Jesus from behind and began to weep.

Her tears fell onto His feet. Overwhelmed with emotion, she wiped His feet with her hair, kissed them repeatedly, and poured perfume over them.

The room must have fallen silent.

Her actions were deeply personal, vulnerable, and completely unrestrained.

But not everyone saw devotion. Some saw a scandal.

The Silent Judgment

As Simon observed what was happening, he quietly judged both the woman and Jesus.

He reasoned to himself that if Jesus were truly a prophet, He would recognise the kind of woman touching Him and refuse her actions.

Simon’s thoughts reflected a common attitude of religious pride. He saw the woman’s past, but he did not see her repentance.

Jesus Reveals the Heart

Knowing Simon’s thoughts, Jesus responded with a short story.

He described two people who owed money to a creditor. One owed a large amount, while the other owed a much smaller debt.

When neither could repay what they owed, the creditor forgave both debts.

Then Jesus asked Simon a simple question.

“Which of them will love him more?”

Simon answered correctly.

“The one who had the bigger debt forgiven.”

Love That Flows From Forgiveness

Jesus then turned toward the woman and explained the deeper meaning of what was happening.

Simon had offered basic hospitality but had not shown special honour to his guest.

The woman, however, had expressed extraordinary love.

Her tears washed Jesus’ feet.

Her hair dried them.

Her perfume filled the room.

These were not empty gestures.

They were expressions of gratitude from a heart that recognised the depth of God’s mercy.

Jesus declared something remarkable:

“Her many sins have been forgiven — as her great love has shown.”

Her devotion was the visible evidence of forgiveness already at work in her life.

The Power of Grace

Those watching the scene began to question among themselves.

“Who is this who even forgives sins?”

The answer was standing right before them.

Jesus was revealing His authority not only to heal bodies or teach wisdom, but to forgive sin and restore broken lives.

Then He spoke directly to the woman.

“Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”

With those words, her story changed.

The woman who entered the house with a reputation left with forgiveness.

Why This Story Still Matters

This encounter reveals a powerful truth about the nature of grace.

People who recognise the depth of God’s forgiveness often respond with profound love and devotion. The woman’s past did not disqualify her from approaching Jesus. In fact, her awareness of her need drew her closer to Him.

Where others saw shame, Jesus saw repentance.

Where others saw scandal, Jesus saw faith.

Her story reminds us that the grace of God reaches beyond human judgment.

And when forgiveness takes root in the heart, it often produces a love that cannot remain hidden.
