Reflection on John 15:26

I've been studying the gospel of John. Today I was doing chapter 15. There is so much to to talk about, but today I couldn't get past verse 26 and so I had to ask this question: How does the Holy Spirit testify about Jesus? And I realised that this gets to the heart of how God makes Jesus known, not just historically, but personally.

In John 15:26, Jesus says:

“When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, He will testify about me.”

The word testify means to bear witness, to give evidence, to confirm what is true. So the Holy Spirit’s role is to bear witness to who Jesus really is.

Here are the main ways the Holy Spirit testifies about Jesus:

1. Through Scripture – revealing Christ in the Word

The Holy Spirit inspired Scripture (2 Timothy 3:16), and He continues to open our eyes to see Jesus in it. This is why two people can read the same passage, and one is bored while the other is pierced in the heart. The Spirit makes Christ real in the text - not just information, but revelation.

Jesus says later in the gospel of John:

“He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.” (John 16:14)

The Spirit doesn’t point to Himself. He points to Jesus.

2. In our hearts – inward conviction and revelation

The Holy Spirit testifies inside us. Paul says:

“No one can say ‘Jesus is Lord’ except by the Holy Spirit.” (1 Corinthians 12:3)

This doesn’t mean saying the words, it means truly seeing, believing, and yielding.

The Spirit convinces the heart: This is the Son of God. This is the truth. This is your Saviour.

That inner knowing is spiritual witness.

3. By convicting the world about Jesus

In John 16:8–10, Jesus explains this testimony further:

“He will convict the world concerning sin, righteousness, and judgment.”

The Spirit shows:

Our sin → we need a Saviour

Christ’s righteousness → Jesus is the answer

The defeat of darkness → Jesus is Lord

So even repentance is a form of the Spirit testifying: “Look to Christ. He is the way back to God.”

4. Through transformed lives

One of the most obvious testimonies of the Spirit is a changed life.

When someone is being made new - loving what they once hated, turning from sin, growing in holiness - that is the Spirit saying to the world:

Jesus is alive. Jesus saves. Jesus reigns.

We become “living letters” (2 Corinthians 3:3). The Spirit writes Christ into human lives.

5. Through spiritual gifts and witness

The Holy Spirit also testifies through:

  • preaching and teaching

  • prophecy and wisdom

  • healing and miracles

  • boldness in witness

In Acts 1:8 Jesus says:

“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses.”

The Spirit empowers believers to speak about Jesus - but more than that, He makes Jesus present in the speaking.

The Deepest Truth

The Holy Spirit does not bring a new message. He brings a living revelation of the same Jesus. His entire ministry is Christ-centred: He reveals Jesus. He glorifies Jesus. He forms Jesus in us (Galatians 4:19). He leads us into deeper union with Jesus.

So when Jesus says “He will testify about me”, He is saying:

"The Spirit will make sure that I am not just remembered - but known, loved, believed, and encountered."

Grace and peace.
