Blasphemy of The Holy Spirit: What It Is and What It Isn't

Updated: Aug 20

There are a few scriptures that stir more fear and confusion than the words of Jesus about the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. Many believers have read those verses and wondered, "Have I committed the unforgivable sin?" If that's you, take a deep breath - you're not alone, and there's clarity and comfort ahead.

What did Jesus say?

"Truly I tell you, people can be forgiven all their sins and every slander they utter, but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin."

~ Mark 3:28-29 NIV

This statement is repeated in Matthew 12:31-32 and Luke 12:10, and it has caused many to pause in fear. But to truly understand it, we need to look at the context, the heart of God, and the work of the Holy Spirit.

What was happening in that moment?

Jesus had just cast out a demon, bringing freedom to someone oppressed. Instead of celebrating the miracle, the Pharisees accused Him of casting out demons by the power of Satan, and not the Holy Spirit.

Mind you, they were not ignorant at all. They were seeing undeniable evidence of God's power, but still chose to slander it and call it evil. That's where Jesus gave the strong warning about blaspheming the Holy Spirit.

So What is Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit?

It is not just the slip of a tongue. It is deliberate, knowing, ongoing rejection of the work of the Holy Spirit, especially His testimony about who Jesus is.

It is:

  • Attributing the work of the Holy Spirit to Satan, knowing it is from God.

  • Rejecting the Holy Spirit's conviction and grace repeatedly, hardening your heart.

  • A heart posture that is fully closed to repentance, even when the truth is clear.

What it is not:

Let's be very clear. Many believers worry they've committed this sin, but most of those worries come from misunderstanding. Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is NOT:

  • Doubting your faith or struggling with pockets of unbelief

  • Saying something wrong out of confusion

  • Falling into sin and feeling guilty about it

  • Having a season of distance from God.

  • Asking questions, wrestling or feeling afraid

In fact, the very fact that you're concerned about grieving the Holy Spirit is proof that your heart is still rightly postured.

So, Why Is It Unforgivable?

This isn't about God being unwilling to forgive. He is merciful and full of grace. But the Holy Spirit it the One who draws us to Jesus, convicts our hearts, and leads us into repentance. If someone continually rejects the Holy Spirit's call, they essentially reject the only path to forgiveness. Not because God doesn't want to forgive, but because they've chosen not to receive it.

Hope For The Worried Heart

If you are seeking God, hungry for His presence, or even just reading this with a humble heart, you have not committed the unforgivable sin. Your desire to understand and stay aligned with God is proof of the Spirit still moving in you.

A broken and contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.

Psalm 51:17

Final Thoughts

God's heart is not to push you away, but to draw you near. The blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is not a trap waiting to catch you off guard - it is a warning to those who persistently reject truth with full knowledge of what they're doing.

If you're pursuing God, even imperfectly, you are safe in His mercy. Let this truth anchor you: The same Spirit who convicts you is the One who comforts you. And He is still working.

Grace and Peace.
