Scripture introduces her in a single sentence, yet that sentence carries weight of twelve years of suffering. The bible tells us she had been bleeding for twelve years. This was not simply a medical problem. In the Jewish law of that time, continual bleeding placed a person in a state of ceremonial uncleanness according to the book of Leviticus. That meant she was not only physically weak but also socially and spiritually isolated.
